Richmond Foundation said in a statement that a large number of persons go through, or are currently going through a challenging time related to their mental health. They based their statement on statistics published by the World Health Organisation estimating that 1 out of every 3 persons will experience a mental health issue at some point in their lives.
“Notwithstanding, the vast majority of these persons continue to live a fulfilling life, contributing to society and forging meaningful relationships with the people around them. There are several well-known persons, both locally and abroad, who have spoken out about their struggles with mental health, but who have still been successful in whichever career they chose for themselves” said the statement by Malta’s foremost NGO working in the sector of mental health.
The statement was released following media reports about the hospitalisation of Minister Justyne Caruana, who was not named in the same statement. While one should not judge a situation without knowing all the facts, Richmond added that “persons occupying public positions are expected to offer a level of information to the public who they represent. This also avoids unnecessary speculation.”
Richmond noted that the Covid-19 pandemic has shown us that each one of us is susceptible to experiencing mental health issues and urged all to focus on positive support without shining a critical and judgmental light on a person when they are down because of mental stress.
Those faced by any mental health issue can phone Richmond’s 1770 helpline any time of day or night.
